March Math Madness

Welcome to March Math Madness!  This is our second year working with our March Math Madness program.  This activity is designed to focus on the probability and statistics of various basketball teams advancing due to win and loss records.  Students will begin March Math Madness by researching each of the qualifying teams.  We will be looking at their win/loss record and change their win record to a percentage.  Students are then asked to use the percentages to fill in their desired basketball brackets.  As the competition gets harder, students are focused to look at the team’s records and statistics.  As the rounds of games are completed, students will take the number of teams advancing and write them in fraction, decimal, and percent form.  We will discuss as a class the probability of a team advancing and what is happening to our individual percentages as teams are being eliminated.  Our goal is for students to focus on the basic facts of converting fractions to decimals and percent’s and vice versa.  In addition, we are displaying how probability and statistics are found in today's society.  Students will keep track of their brackets and percentages.  At the end of each class, I will ask students an exit question.  This question is based on the topic we are currently learning in class.  Those students that get the answer right have a chance to take a shot at our classroom basketball hoop.  Those that score make the shot get an extra 1, 2, or 3 points added to their percentages based on the difficulty of the question.  Students are motivated to pay attention in class, pay attention to detail, and work hard to master that day's concept.

Below is the link to the NCAA website for the students to keep track of their bracket at home.  In addition, below are the two highest ranked students in our class.  Good luck to all students!
